An overreation to an overreaction

 Martin C, Editor

ImageWith the final being three days ago now, I feel that everything that could have been said has been said, so I’m not going to dwell on it for too long.

It was a great performance from the boys and we can be proud that our team of youngsters can outplay the Premiership champions for most of the 90.

What a future this team has!

Obviously the media are ensuring that the game is remembered for all of the wrong reasons. The incidents have been blown out of all proportion and it’s sad that the game can’t be remembered for what it really was: an excellent, entertaining game of football.

The FA have charged both clubs with misconduct over the incidents, while Toure, Adebayor and probably Eboue will get three match bans:

“The charge alleges that the clubs failed to ensure that their ‘players and/or officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative and/or violent behaviour.”

What a load of rubbish. But onwards and upwards to tonight’s important FA Cup replay at Ewood Park. Our squad is looking worringly thin as it looks like we’re going to be missing 10 first team players.

We really need to win tonight. The FA Cup is our only chance of domestic silverware this season and we’ve played some of our best football in this competition so far. Kick-off tonight is at 8pm.

A frustrating, lacklustre display

 Martin C, Editor

It was a hugely frustrating game to watch tonight. After dominating most of the first half as PSV sat back, we were handed defeat thanks to a sweetly stuck Mendes goal on 60 minutes.

Cesc FabregasTomas Rosicky looked bright all game and was unlucky to see his shot saved excellently in the first half. There were no other notable performances from the rest of the side and on the face of it, it seemed that we just couldn’t click into gear.

At times it looked like we lacked desire and there appeared to be no sense of urgency once we conceeded.

Baptista came on for the final 15 minutes but failed make a huge impact. Cesc looks tired again and Gallas doesn’t quite look fully fit yet. It was also interesting to see our centre-backs playing so many long-balls to our front men. It’s un-Arsenal and means our midfield is surpassed. Plus it doesn’t seem to be very effective.

I would have liked to have seen the likes of Aliadiere or Ljungberg come on earlier for Hleb, who’s just come back from injury. Jeremie’s been on good form of late and I think he could have provided us with that flair that was missing tonight.

Thierry looks like he’s a little off his game at the moment. That said, we all know he can switch it on and split defences in an instant, so best to be patient with that one.

Clearly, not the ideal result to carry through to Sunday, although the side fielded is likely to be a much younger one.

A bore-draw at the Emirates

 Martin C, Editor

A really disappointing, frustrating result yesterday against a Blackburn side who really offered absolutely nothing all game.

imageYes, both sides were involved in physically-draining midweek matches, but after the result and excellent display at Bolton, yesterday’s game was a real anticlimax.

We had a couple of half-decent chances towards the very end of the game, but to be honest we really looked off the pace, without tempo and without drive which ultimately left us without an end-product and with a replay at Ewood Park to look forward too. Brilliant.

But what a contrast to Wednesday night!

So much so that it’s left me really not wanting to talk or even think about it!

Obviously squad rotation had a huge part to play in the different performances, with Toure and Almunia being the only players who started both games.

Anyway, next up is an important trip to Holland and PSV on Tuesday night. As Ian Grant has said, let’s hope yesterdays game was just a blip in a series of otherwise good and convincing performances.
